Celebrating Mother's Day : Know the origin of Mother's day.
Mothers are an epitome of love. We all have funny, loving experiences with our mothers. Be it over-feeding us or staying up all night with us as we study for our exams, our mothers leave no stones unturned when it comes to keeping us happy- and umm.. well fed (the words ‘empty tummy’ does not exist in their dictionary). A day dedicated to these amazing beings who gave true meaning to the terms ‘unconditional love’ is what we famously call Mother’s day. Mother’s day is one of the most celebrated days after Christmas and Easter in the US! It can be considered nothing less than a festival honoured all across the world. After all, it is a day dedicated to the real super heroes of our lives. From multi-tasking to figuring out exactly what is running on our minds, they know it all! But do you know how this day came into existence?
One of the earliest mother’s day celebrations was traced back to ancient Greece, where the Greek would have spring celebrations in the honour of Rhea, the goddess of fertility, motherhood and generation. But it wasn’t known as mother’s day just yet. In the United Kingdom, there once existed a major tradition which fell on the fourth Sunday in Lent which gradually came to be known as ‘Mothering Sunday’. This custom eventually faded in popularity and soon the American epitome of Mother’s day was created by Anna Jarvis in the year 1908 which went on to become an official U S Holiday in the year 1914.
Anna Jarvis, daughter of Ann Reeves Jarvis created the tradition of Mother’s day as a way of honouring the sacrifices mothers made for their children. After the success of her first ‘Mother’s day, Anna was determined to see her holiday on the national calendar. By the 1930’s, Mother’s day had gained massive popularity. Anna had originally initiated Mother’s day as a personal celebration between mothers and families, but much to her dismay, companies had begun capitalizing on its popularity. She resorted to bring back the original emotions of mother’s day, which was really just to appreciate how wonderful our mothers are and acknowledge their unconditional love.
Today, mother’s day may still be commercialised, but the true emotions behind this day still stand strong. We love our mothers and along with giving them gifts on this one day to make them feel happy and appreciated, we should strive to make every day wonderful for them. This quarantine, lend an extra hand to your lovely mothers because quarantine or not, mothers always work hard to put a smile on our faces.
